Chinese factory-gate prices rose faster in September, with higher commodity prices and demand from AI-related infrastructure among the factors cited by a statistician, the South China Morning Post reports. Consumer inflation remained subdued: the paper says the consumer price index rose 0.9 per cent year on year, up from 0.8 per cent in August.
Why it mattersIt is a small but useful signal of AI’s reach beyond chips and data centres: demand for the infrastructure may also be showing up in industrial prices. The report’s excerpt does not give the producer-price increase itself, so we’ll leave the crystal ball in its box.
Discuss: Should rising infrastructure costs be treated as a warning about the AI build-out, or simply as one more effect of stronger demand?
