AI agents may not need to leave the browser to get useful work done. In a Substack essay published on 12 October, the author argues that browsers already offer agents useful foundations, including sandboxing, authentication and visible user sessions.
Why it mattersThe essay points to WebMCP, a proposed standard for websites to expose JavaScript functions and HTML forms as structured tools. That could give agents a more direct way to interact with websites than relying on a maze of separate APIs and command-line tools. The browser has been declared obsolete before; apparently it has other plans.
Discuss: Should websites expose structured tools for AI agents through standards such as WebMCP, or does that give automated systems too much access to logged-in sessions?
