AI-cloned voices and deepfake video can make an old payment scam look like a call from the boss. Benzinga contributor Thomas Young’s article describes a $59.3 million charge recorded by Orion after an employee was tricked into transferring money, and lays out practical checks for finance teams.
Why it mattersThe advice is pointed: never approve a payment on a call alone, verify requests by calling a number already on file, and require approval through the finance system. For investors, the article also suggests checking filings for fraud losses and whether claimed insurance has actually paid out. A convincing face on screen is not an authorisation form. The awkward callback may be the control that matters.
Discuss: Should companies put more effort into staff verification procedures, or invest in technical deepfake detection even if neither can guarantee a scam will be caught?
