People judged even the most responsive AI less conscious than the least responsive human, according to a study summarised by ScienceDaily. When asked about “awareness” instead, participants judged humans and AI much more similarly.
Why it mattersThat split suggests our verdict on machine minds may depend as much on the word we use as on how convincingly a system behaves. Consciousness and awareness are not interchangeable labels, it seems, even when a questionnaire would quite like them to be.
Discuss: Should claims that AI is conscious be judged by how it behaves, or by what people mean when they use words such as “consciousness” and “awareness”?
