AI safety groups and individual donors have spent $48 million on US election races this cycle, Axios reports, citing new figures shared with the outlet. The spending backs candidates seen as open to AI regulation, and puts a substantial sum behind a debate that is increasingly happening in campaign politics, not just research labs.
Why it mattersThe figures include $11.7 million raised by tech-worker-backed group Guardrails Alliance through its super PAC and 501(c)(4), Axios says. The report also names donations from AI researchers and describes a rival political effort, Leading the Future, which had more than $31 million at the end of the second quarter. This is a reported snapshot of campaign spending, not evidence that donors acted together or that their money will determine policy. But $48 million is no longer a fringe footnote in the AI debate.
Discuss: Should AI-industry political donations be treated as ordinary participation, or scrutinised as a source of influence over the rules?
