The IMF has raised its 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1%, while warning that the AI boom brings risks as well as demand. Its outlook assumes AI demand will moderate, and says the benefits are unevenly distributed.
Why it mattersThe report says the US and China account for more than three-quarters of net demand for imports of chips and other AI-related equipment. IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva also estimates that about 40% of jobs globally could be augmented, downgraded or eliminated by AI over time. That is a forecast and an estimate, not a job-loss tally. But the IMF’s warning puts the boom’s economic exposure and uneven reach in the same frame.
Discuss: Should policymakers focus more on sharing AI’s gains, or on preparing workers and markets for the disruption?
