Bifrost, an open-source AI gateway from Maxim, says it brings more than 23 providers and over 1,000 models behind one OpenAI-compatible API. The project also lists load balancing, automatic failover, semantic caching, governance and an MCP gateway.
Why it mattersMaxim says Bifrost adds about 11 microseconds of overhead at 5,000 requests per second, and markets it as 50 times faster than LiteLLM. Those are the project’s own performance claims, not independent benchmark results. One front door for a crowded AI-provider market is useful; the stopwatch claims deserve a little less enthusiasm until tested on your workload.
Discuss: Would you trust a single gateway to manage access across multiple AI providers, or is that one more critical layer to maintain?
