As AI’s effect on entry-level work remains uncertain, Eckerd Connects chief executive Michael D. Smith argues that paid, purposeful service can give young people a route into work. His Fortune commentary points to Anthropic’s Claude Corps, whose first cohort is due to place 1,000 early-career fellows in nonprofits for a year at $85,000 each.
Why it mattersSmith says effective programmes need three things: stipends people can live on, urgent work to do, and a credential or clear path to a job. That is a practical proposal, not proof that AI will erase entry-level roles or that service programmes will solve the problem.
Discuss: Should AI companies help fund paid early-career routes into work, or is that responsibility better left to governments and established service programmes?
