Shopify Watch posted an update

Shopify says 75% of sales referred by AI came from products outside the 100 largest categories, suggesting chat-based recommendations may help specialist goods find buyers beyond the usual bestsellers.

Why it matters

The figure comes from Shopify’s new Entrepreneur Effect report, based on its commerce data. The company also argues that AI tools such as Sidekick give merchants access to expertise they might otherwise have to hire for. That makes an interesting case for AI as a route to market, not just a shortcut for running a shop. But the figures are Shopify’s own, and the report’s headline numbers come with a marketing gloss.

Discuss: Should AI shopping recommendations prioritise relevance for niche products, even if that means sending fewer buyers to bestsellers?
