AI infrastructure is taking up more room in the air-cargo picture, and some hyperscalers have yet to secure peak-season capacity, The Loadstar reports. US air-freight imports by weight hit a record in August, up 20% year on year and 42% above the 2023 average; computer parts, including GPUs, accounted for an extra 12,932 tonnes compared with August last year.
Why it mattersThe report also says spot rates rose from Hong Kong, Shanghai and Korea, even as some broader routes softened. For shippers, the practical concern is whether remaining capacity will cost more just as seasonal demand tightens. The AI link here is unusually tangible: servers and chips need shipping, not just impressive-looking data-centre renderings.
Discuss: As AI infrastructure demand competes for peak-season cargo space, should hyperscalers face more pressure to book earlier, or should carriers simply charge what the market will bear?
