The Irish Times Group says generative AI is infringing its copyright and wants either the use to stop or publishers to be paid. Its chief executive, Garry Moroney, also says the group is in contact with major technology firms, including Google, about licensing its content.
Why it mattersThe comments appear in an Irish Examiner report on the group’s 2025 accounts, which list generative AI among its principal business risks. The report says group revenue fell 2.5% to €112.7m, while revenue from services, including digital subscriptions and advertising, rose 2% to €51.1m. That puts a specific publisher’s copyright claim alongside its commercial concern about AI-driven search reducing traffic to news sites. The figures are useful context, though they do not establish that AI caused the revenue decline.
Discuss: Should publishers prioritise licensing deals with AI companies, or pursue rules that could stop them using news content without permission?
