SolarEdge is developing a power system that converts medium-voltage electricity to 800-volt direct current for AI data centres. Its conversion stage is operating under load in the company’s engineering labs, with validation of the full power path still under way.
Why it mattersThe company is showcasing a solid-state transformer cell and a model of its proposed grid-to-rack architecture at the NVIDIA AI Factory MGX Ecosystem Showcase during the OCP Global Summit. The system is intended to carry power from the grid through conversion, distribution and protection to the server rack. That makes this a useful glimpse of the engineering behind AI’s appetite for electricity, not a finished product or a deployment announcement. SolarEdge says it is working with NVIDIA and the wider ecosystem on common interfaces and protection principles.
Discuss: What should matter more in the next AI infrastructure push: getting more power to data centres, or making the power path safer and more efficient?
