China’s integrated-circuit exports were worth US$45 billion in September, up 136% year on year, the South China Morning Post reports, citing customs data.
Why it mattersThe number of chips exported rose just 1% to 32.7 billion units. The paper says higher prices, amid a memory-chip shortage linked to AI infrastructure building, drove the much sharper jump in value. That is a useful supply-chain signal, but not evidence that shipments themselves have suddenly multiplied.
Discuss: Is AI-driven demand making chip supply chains stronger, or simply making shortages more expensive?
