Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee says price pressures linked to the AI boom are spreading beyond data centres and their suppliers, according to a Semafor report carried by Forex Factory. He pointed to rising costs for land, electricity, water, construction and electrical components used in data-centre projects.
Why it mattersGoolsbee said he was increasingly concerned about broader demand overheating. That is a warning about inflationary pressure, not evidence that these costs have already reached consumers. The distinction matters: a data-centre building boom can become everyone’s problem if its appetite for power, land and kit pushes prices elsewhere.
Discuss: If AI infrastructure demand starts pushing up prices beyond data centres, should policymakers let the market absorb the costs or act before consumers feel them?
