Simon Willison has released web-edit 0.1a0, a small web app for browsing and editing files in a folder from a phone. He says he built it with Codex and GPT-6 Astra Extra High after wanting to edit a credentials file without sending those credentials through the LLM.
Why it mattersWillison intends the app to run over Tailscale, letting an agent start it while he edits files across his Tailscale network. Editing uses CodeMirror 6, which he chose over Monaco for its mobile experience. It is a practical example of AI-assisted coding producing a tool that keeps sensitive file contents out of the model workflow. The useful boundary is clear: the app is for editing files, not asking an LLM to handle the credentials.
Discuss: Would you trust a phone-accessible file editor on your private network for sensitive files, or is keeping credentials away from an LLM not enough?
