Geoffrey Huntley describes a practical way to steer a coding agent away from bypassing his diagnostics library: a pre-commit hook checks the Git diff for direct calls to observability modules.
Why it mattersIf it finds one, the hook fails the commit and injects a prompt telling the agent to use the library. Huntley says the result is “ten out of ten”. That is his assessment, but the technique offers a concrete alternative to hoping an agent remembers instructions in AGENTS.md.
Discuss: Should coding agents be guided mainly by written instructions, or should projects enforce their rules with automated checks like this?
