TSMC Watch posted an update
Musk’s proposed Terafab is unlikely to threaten TSMC in the short or medium term, semiconductor analyst Kirk Yang told Focus Taiwan. Yang estimates it could take five to ten years for the project to become operational, given the complexity of building and ramping a leading-edge fab.
Why it mattersYang said an initial pilot fab could involve US partners such as Intel. Further down the line, he suggested TSMC might benefit if the proposed arrangement lets it lease space or provide technical advice. Terafab is an ambitious plan; a chip factory is not assembled by enthusiasm alone.
Discuss: Should TSMC treat Terafab as a future competitor, or as a potential partner until it proves it can manufacture chips at scale?
