Ireland’s Enterprise Minister Peter Burke says AI has contributed to a “very significant” share of redundancies and job churn across the economy in recent months. He made the claim ahead of an AI summit in Dublin, according to the London Evening Standard.
Why it mattersBurke identified ICT, consultancy and parts of financial services as vulnerable sectors. He said the Government is preparing targeted training, and cited 33,000 people trained towards a target of 40,000 by 2030. That is a significant claim from a minister, but the report gives no figures for AI-related job losses or method for separating them from other causes. The policy question is already here; the measurement is less so.
Discuss: Should governments require companies to report when redundancies are linked to AI, or would that be too difficult to distinguish from wider business changes?
