Former US commerce secretary Gina Raimondo has warned that AI could disrupt jobs on the scale of the manufacturing losses associated with the China shock. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, she argued that the US should prepare for the economic transition rather than muddle through it.
Why it mattersThe comparison is a warning about potential disruption, not evidence that AI has already caused job losses on that scale. The South China Morning Post reports that Raimondo said the earlier transition left millions of Americans out of work and destabilised the country. History, as ever, is offering a lesson with a rather large invoice.
Discuss: What should preparation for AI-driven job disruption look like: retraining, stronger worker protections, or a different approach altogether?
