AI companies are moving towards pricing that mixes subscriptions, credits and usage charges, according to Stripe’s account of discussions at its Monetize conference. The shift reflects a practical snag: demand and computing costs can be hard to predict.
Why it mattersStripe says companies are also adding spending controls and judging AI by operational results rather than token counts. In other words, the bill may increasingly track what a tool does, not just how much text it produces. That could make costs easier to manage, but it also makes comparing plans less straightforward. The old monthly price tag had its charms.
Discuss: For AI services, would you rather have a predictable monthly fee or pay according to use, even if the bill varies?
