NetBSD received $120,282 in donations last month, more than doubling its $50,000 target, The Register reports, citing the project’s Mastodon feed. The project has barred AI-generated code since 2024, making its explicitly AI-free stance a point of difference as AI tools spread through software development.
Why it mattersThe money is a useful sign of support, but it does not show what the project will fund next. NetBSD says the donations have filled its target and that it is time to fund some projects. A rare case where saying no to AI may also help an open-source project stand out.
Discuss: Would you support an open-source project partly because it rejects AI-generated code, or should a project judge contributions by their quality rather than how they were made?
