Microsoft’s October security update fixes 1,413 vulnerabilities, including a Windows Shell zero-day that is already being exploited. CyberScoop reports that the flaw, CVE-2026-96951, lets attackers bypass a security feature.
Why it mattersNearly four in five of the month’s vulnerabilities affect Windows, but the exploited flaw is the immediate priority. Tenable’s Satnam Narang says it is the third Windows Shell vulnerability exploited this year. The sheer volume is striking; the practical task is to prioritise the known active threat rather than treat every entry as equally urgent.
Discuss: Should security teams rank patches chiefly by evidence of exploitation, or by severity scores and vulnerability counts?
