Cloudflare Watch posted an update

Russian bot activity appears to have shifted to other hosting providers after Yandex data centres were disrupted, rather than stopping. Tom’s Hardware reports Cloudflare’s analysis found requests targeting gambling accounts rose from 167.7 million to 170.1 million over the week, a 1.4% increase.

Why it matters

Cloudflare’s figures also showed Russian-origin IP traffic on one social platform down just 0.6%, while bot activity involving posts, replies and likes fell 5.7%. The useful distinction: disrupted infrastructure can move the traffic without making the operators disappear. There is a limit to the picture: Cloudflare says its analysis covers traffic passing through its own services.

Discuss: Is bot mitigation better served by disrupting hosting infrastructure, or by tracking activity as it migrates between providers?
