Google says its SynthID watermarking has been applied to more than 180 billion images and videos, as well as 240,000 years of audio. The company says TIME has named SynthID one of its Best Inventions of 2026.
Why it mattersSynthID embeds an invisible, durable watermark in AI-generated media. Google says people can check content through Search, Gemini, Chrome and its SynthID Detector. That is a striking adoption figure, though it is Google’s own tally, not an independent measure of how often the marks can be detected in practice.
Discuss: Should AI-content labels rely on invisible watermarks, or do they need a visible label people can recognise without a detector?
