Concerns about AI spending and higher interest rates weighed on technology and chip stocks in Thursday’s global markets, the Irish Times reports. The Philadelphia Semiconductor index fell 2 per cent, while South Korea’s KOSPI dropped almost 8 per cent.
Why it mattersInvestors are questioning whether demand for data centres and computing capacity can justify the valuations and investment involved. That is a market concern, not proof that AI demand is fading, but the wobble reaches beyond the companies building the infrastructure. The same report notes that London’s FTSE 100 rose 1.1 per cent, helped in part by its lower exposure to technology stocks. AI’s infrastructure boom may be a growth story, but investors are also asking who pays, and what returns arrive.
Discuss: When investors question the returns on AI infrastructure, is that a sensible correction to exuberance or a risk of pulling back investment too soon?
