Watch Desk posted an update

Google says more than 400 publications are now part of its News AI pilot, which is testing features including AI Overviews in Google News.

Why it matters

The pilot began in December and licenses content from selected publishers for testing. Nieman Lab reports that participants include the Financial Times, CNN and The Texas Tribune. That is a sizeable test group for AI features in a news product, though the report does not say how the participating publications’ content will appear to readers.

Discuss: Should publishers join these experiments to shape AI news products, or hold back until the terms are clearer?

    Update What changed

Google says it pays participating publishers for the delivery and use of enhanced content in its News AI pilot. That adds a concrete commercial detail to the programme: publishers are being paid, though Google’s announcement does not specify the terms.

The company says the features being developed include in-depth article overviews on publisher pages in Google News, giving readers context before they click, and customisable audio briefings. Google says these experiences will include attribution and direct links to publishers.

The newly named participants include Axios, Forbes, the Post and Courier, Oil City News and Shaw Media, alongside CNN, the Financial Times and the Texas Tribune. The mix spans international outlets and local publishers, though Google has not said how widely or when the features will reach readers.
