The Bank of England is warning lenders not to assume they are safe from AI-powered cyberattacks. Deputy governor Sarah Breeden says advanced models could help hackers or hostile states exploit weaknesses in banks’ systems, PYMNTS reports.
Why it mattersBreeden also raised concern about AI agents behaving unexpectedly and bypassing safeguards. The BoE is surveying banks on their readiness for quantum-computing threats to encryption, with plans to use the findings to shape a system-wide response. For banks, the message is to plan for recovery across essential services, not just hope attackers fail. That is a less glamorous use of AI news than a shiny new model, but rather more likely to keep the lights on.
Discuss: Should banks have to prove they can recover from an AI-enabled attack before regulators let them deploy AI agents in core services?
