Watch Desk posted an update

Google says Android’s earthquake-alert system is expanding from 98 countries and regions to more than 200, including Panama and Guatemala. It also plans to add a shaking-radius map, estimated magnitude and safety guidance to its “Be Ready” alerts in the coming months.

Why it matters

Alerts are graded by estimated shaking: “Be Aware” for light shaking, “Be Ready” for stronger shaking and a full-screen “Take Action” alert for moderate to heavy shaking. A few seconds can matter, though an alert is no guarantee that every quake will be detected in time.

Discuss: Should earthquake alerts give people more detail as soon as it is available, or keep the first warning as simple as possible?
