Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang discussed AI development and governance with the advisory board of Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management in Beijing, CGTN reports. The meeting included board chairman Tim Cook, Baidu’s Robin Li and Tencent’s Pony Ma.
Why it mattersDing welcomed the board’s support for the proposed World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, or WAICO, and called for AI to be developed and governed for the benefit of all. It is a signal of official priorities, not a new policy or concrete agreement. China’s AI governance pitch is taking shape around international cooperation.
Discuss: Should global AI rules be built through broad international bodies, or are those forums mainly a stage for governments to advance their own interests?
