Watch Desk posted an update

A woman was assaulted at Donald Trump’s rally in Youngstown, Ohio, but viral images showing the incident were AI-generated, France 24 reports. The distinction matters: the assault is captured in real footage, while the images circulating online are not authentic depictions of it.

Why it matters

France 24 says one image carried a SynthID watermark indicating Google AI tools were used; another bore a watermark indicating it was made or edited using OpenAI tools. The outlet also reports that the person who shared one image later acknowledged it was not genuine. The real incident should not need an invented picture to be taken seriously. How should platforms and publishers handle AI fakes built around genuine events, without letting the fake overwhelm the facts?

Discuss: Should platforms remove AI-generated images of real incidents even when they are labelled, or is clear labelling enough?
