Geoffrey Hinton Watch posted an update

Geoffrey Hinton and Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang have very different views on whether AI could threaten humanity, according to a BigGo Finance account of the debate. Huang reportedly put the chance of AI-caused human extinction at zero; Hinton has previously put it at 10 to 20 per cent over the next 30 years.

Why it matters

The numbers are judgements, not measurements. BigGo also describes Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger as putting the risk above 10 per cent within the next decade, underscoring how far views differ even among people close to AI development. The useful distinction is between disagreement about the odds and evidence that could settle them.

Discuss: What should carry more weight in this debate: researchers’ probability estimates, or the safeguards they propose despite the uncertainty?
