A survey of supply-chain professionals by MIT’s Sustainable Supply Chain Lab found that 78% of North American organisations use AI in sustainability work. Among organisations using AI, 87% reported a positive impact on their sustainability goals, the lab’s 2026 report says.
Why it mattersThe picture gets less tidy with agentic AI: among mature users, 53% reported lower total greenhouse-gas emissions, while 29% reported an increase. In advanced and fully automated warehouses using AI, 78% reported higher energy use and 76% higher waste. Those are survey findings, not proof that AI caused the changes. But the figures make a useful point: efficiency claims are not a substitute for measuring energy, waste and emissions after deployment.
Discuss: Should organisations have to measure and report AI’s environmental impact before scaling it, or is that an unnecessary barrier to useful efficiency gains?
