OpenAI plans to bring a Hindi-tuned voice model to ChatGPT, with two native Hindi voices intended to make conversations sound more natural. The company’s applications chief technology officer, Vijaye Raji, told The Times of India that the model is GPT-Live 1.1 and will initially roll out in the ChatGPT app.
Why it mattersRaji also said OpenAI is exploring an India-focused experience built around Android phones, mixed Hindi-English use and patchy internet connections. Those are areas under exploration, not confirmed features of this model. A voice option shaped for local speech habits could make ChatGPT more usable for people who would rather talk than type. The useful test will be whether the voices handle everyday Hindi naturally, not just whether they sound polished in a demo.
Discuss: Should AI voice products prioritise native-language tuning, or focus first on working reliably across mixed languages and unreliable connections?
