Google says its AI-powered forecasts can give up to seven days’ notice for river floods across 150 countries, and up to 24 hours for urban flash floods. Its new Crisis Resilience white paper also describes cyclone forecasts up to 15 days ahead and fire-boundary maps already operating in 34 countries.

Why it matters

The figures offer a useful snapshot of how forecasting and satellite mapping are being applied to disaster preparation, though they are Google’s account of its own work. A planned FireSat satellite constellation is designed to detect and track fires as small as a classroom within 20 minutes once completed. Early warning is only useful if people can act on it, but those forecast windows show the practical stakes of AI weather tools.

Discuss: Which matters more for disaster warnings: gaining more time, or proving that alerts reliably reach the people who need them?
