A Newsroom article questions the familiar defence of AI companions: that talking to a chatbot is better than being alone. It argues the debate should also ask what relying on a companion might help people avoid, and what happens if that avoidance becomes routine.

Why it matters

The piece acknowledges possible comfort for people who are lonely, grieving or struggling to form relationships, then challenges whether “better than nothing” is a meaningful standard. That is a useful distinction in a debate often reduced to a rather bleak two-option menu. It is an argument, not evidence that AI companions help or harm people in general. Should these tools be judged against isolation, or against the relationships and support they might displace?
