Ukraine has not approved a more aggressive plan to disrupt Russian air travel using AI-guided drones, according to The Atlantic, whose reporting Meduza summarised on 15 October. One source told The Atlantic that mass production of the drones is expected to begin soon.
Why it mattersThe report says the larger-scale plan would use drones capable of evading Russian air defences. It does not say that these drones have been deployed. Separately, Meduza cites calculations by Agentstvo that Moscow’s four airports were closed for a combined 101 hours in the first 14 days of October, compared with 46 hours in all of September. That distinction matters: a reported proposal is not an approved operation, and the airport figures do not by themselves establish what caused the closures. But the account puts AI-guided weapons into a live discussion of how far Ukraine may take its campaign against Russian air travel.
Discuss: If a government is considering AI-guided drones that can evade air defences, should that count as a distinct escalation even before the plan is approved or deployed?
