Singapore’s non-oil domestic exports rose 68.4% year on year in September, with electronics leading the surge. Enterprise Singapore attributed strong demand related to AI to a sharp rise in disk media products and personal computers.
Why it mattersDisk media exports climbed 312.4%, an increase of $1.7 billion, while personal computer exports rose 149.5%, or $0.9 billion, AsiaOne reports. Electronic exports overall were up 107.6%. Enterprise Singapore cautioned that the exceptional growth partly reflects a low base a year earlier. Still, the figures offer a concrete glimpse of AI demand showing up in trade, beyond the usual chip-and-data-centre headlines.
Discuss: Do these export figures show a durable AI-driven shift in demand, or is the low-base effect doing too much of the explaining?
