Colossal Biosciences says its AI tool GenoMorph identified 2,300 candidate genetic elements linked to the dodo’s beak and skull, using genetic data and physical measurements from more than 70 bird species. The Daily Star reports that 653 candidates were associated with beak size and a further 1,698 with beak thickness and breadth.
Why it mattersThe company says these signals do not necessarily cause the traits. They point to areas for further study, not a recipe for bringing back the dodo. AI is helping researchers sift scarce genetic evidence, but the hard biological questions are still very much alive.
Discuss: Should de-extinction projects prioritise identifying candidate traits with AI, or proving that those genetic signals actually cause them before promising progress?
