The money behind AI infrastructure does not stop at the chipmakers. A Coinpaper explainer traces how spending also reaches data-centre builders, power suppliers, networking firms and equipment makers.

Why it matters

One useful distinction: suppliers can be paid while infrastructure is being built, while landlords, utilities and maintenance firms may earn ongoing revenue once it is operating. Cloud providers then have to sell computing capacity to recoup their investment. Coinpaper also notes that announced spending is not money handed over in one go. Microsoft’s reported $31.9 billion in capital expenditure in fiscal Q3 2026 included about two-thirds for shorter-lived assets, mainly GPUs and CPUs. The supply chain is broad; the returns are not automatic.

Discuss: When Big Tech announces vast AI budgets, should scrutiny focus first on who receives the contracts or on whether the finished infrastructure earns its keep?
