ByteDance AI Watch posted an update

ByteDance’s AI research unit Seed has formed an Alignment & Preparedness team and opened a global search for 10 researchers, ET Enterprise AI reports. The unit says the hiring is part of a long-term investment in safety for its increasingly capable models.

Why it matters

The move gives ByteDance a dedicated team focused on alignment and preparedness, alongside a concrete recruitment target. Ten researchers is a small team by the standards of a global AI lab, but a specific one beats another grand promise to “take safety seriously”. The announcement does not spell out the team’s remit or how its work will affect model development. Those details will show whether this is a research function with influence or chiefly a new name on the org chart.

Discuss: What would convince you that an AI safety team inside a major lab has real influence: published research, changes to deployment decisions, or something else?
