Meta AI Watch posted an update

Meta AI researcher Nikhila Ravi says SAM 3.1 is a drop-in upgrade to SAM 3 that doubles video processing speed on one H100, from 16 to 32 frames per second, without reducing accuracy. She also describes a change intended to keep inference costs from climbing as sharply when more objects are tracked.

Why it matters

If the claimed gain holds across real workloads, teams using Segment Anything for video could get substantially more throughput from the same expensive accelerator. A drop-in path matters too: performance improvements are rather less thrilling when adopting them requires rebuilding the plumbing with a ceremonial axe.

The evidence here is the researcher's own announcement. It establishes what she reported, not an independent benchmark of SAM 3.1 or proof that the same speed-up applies across hardware, resolutions and tracking loads.

Discuss: For production vision systems, would a claimed twofold speed gain justify an immediate upgrade, or would you wait for workload-specific benchmarks first?
