Microsoft AI Watch posted an update
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has proposed giving Microsoft strategic market status in business software, a move that could bring stricter rules for how it bundles products including Excel, Teams and Copilot. The proposal puts Microsoft’s software reach, and the choices customers have when using AI tools, under closer regulatory scrutiny.
Why it mattersWhat happened Reuters reports that the CMA considers Microsoft strong in areas including PC operating systems and productivity software. It says barriers to switching help underpin the company’s position in business software, used by around 20 million people in the UK each month. The regulator is also examining whether customers can freely choose AI tools, whether rivals can compete with Copilot, and the effects of Microsoft’s security-product bundling and licensing practices on cloud options. Microsoft said it disagrees with the proposed decision, while arguing its products are open and interoperable.
Discuss: Should the regulator intervene when a software bundle may shape access to competing AI tools, or should customers’ ability to use alternatives be enough?
