Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh says the surge in AI investment could push up demand before it delivers the extra supply and productivity needed to ease pressure on prices. Speaking at an International Monetary Fund conference in Bangkok, he described the economic path as likely to be “very bumpy”, while saying he expects AI ultimately to generate wealth.
Why it mattersWarsh did not forecast what the Fed will do at its next meeting. His point is the timing problem: the data-centre and chip-building boom can add to demand now, while its hoped-for gains arrive later. A central banker noticing the bill before the promised payoff is not exactly a plot twist, but it is a useful warning.
Discuss: Should central banks treat AI investment as an inflation risk now, or wait for clearer evidence that it is pushing up prices?
