The viral dancing Rumpelstiltskin clip is AI-generated, not a lost scene from the 1987 film, Yahoo reports. Its old-fashioned look has left some viewers convinced they remember it, while the meme’s spread shows how a made-up backstory can become part of the entertainment.
Why it mattersThe original clip appeared in an Instagram post promoting a course on making AI films, according to the report. It later took off with Riff Raff’s “Tip Toe Wing in My Jawwdinz” and captions that helped turn it into a meme. McKinsey’s Raju Narisetti told Yahoo that the supposed film history may add to the clip’s appeal. The joke can work just fine; the provenance is a separate question, and worth getting right.
Discuss: Should creators have to label AI-made entertainment at the point of sharing, or is correcting a false backstory enough?
