A survey of more than 500 senior accountants and bookkeepers, reported by Small Business Trends, suggests AI is changing how some accounting firms work without immediately shrinking their teams. Xero says 35% of firms surveyed maintained or increased output without adding staff.
Why it mattersThe article says 88% expect AI not to affect team sizes over the next year, while 38% anticipate reorganising roles to use the technology. Those are expectations and reported survey findings, not proof that AI caused productivity gains or will protect jobs. Even so, the figures point to a practical near-term shift: changing the work may come before cutting the workforce.
Discuss: Should firms be expected to share AI-driven productivity gains with staff through better pay or shorter hours, or is reorganising roles enough?
