Microsoft AI Watch posted an update
Microsoft has agreed to fund new power-generation and transmission assets to serve its data-centre demand in Indiana, under a 20-year agreement with NiSource. The deal also includes 600 MW of battery storage, putting a concrete price tag on the infrastructure race behind AI computing.
Why it mattersWhat happened Under the agreement, NiSource’s NIPSCO and GenCo units will provide the generation and transmission capacity. The new generation is expected to begin supplying power in 2028. NiSource says Microsoft will fully fund the assets needed for its data-centre demand, rather than shifting those costs to existing customers.
Discuss: Should big data-centre operators have to fund the grid capacity their projects require, even if that could make new AI infrastructure more expensive?
