Regina city council has directed staff to gather more information about the city’s involvement in a nearby AI data-centre project. The motion passed 5–4 after more than seven hours of debate, Global News reports.
Why it mattersThe report will look at what decisions have been made and whether the city should have a role in reviewing a secondary concept plan. Final approvals rest with the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, but the site is in a collaborative planning area. Another motion, expected in the coming weeks, would restore the city’s right to review that plan. A small municipal vote, then, with rather large questions about who gets a say over infrastructure built for AI.
Discuss: Should Regina seek a formal review role, or leave planning decisions to the municipality with final approval authority?
