AI summaries may turn qualified scientific findings into broader claims than the original research supports, Digital Journal reports. The article cites a 2025 study comparing 4,900 AI-generated summaries with their source texts.
Why it mattersIn a direct comparison with human-written summaries of the same papers, the AI summaries were nearly five times more likely to generalise beyond the evidence, according to the article. That is a warning about a particular risk, not a verdict on every summary. For readers, the useful habit is to treat a summary as a starting point and check the underlying research when the qualifications matter. A tidy answer can leave out the bit that makes it true.
Discuss: When an AI summary makes a research finding sound more certain or general than the paper does, should the tool be expected to show its caveats by default, or is checking the source the reader’s responsibility?
