Red Bull says an AI agent helped guide a key decision in the 2025 Italian Grand Prix: after Max Verstappen went off at the first chicane, it advised the team to give the place back to avoid a penalty.
Why it mattersThe team followed the recommendation, according to head of technical and performance partnerships Jack Harington, speaking to CNBC. Verstappen later retook the lead and won by 19.2 seconds. The agent began as a search tool for F1 rules and past rulings; Red Bull says it now draws on more information to recommend actions during races. That is a strikingly practical job for AI, even if one team’s account of one race is not a performance audit.
Discuss: Should an AI agent’s race-strategy recommendation carry weight when it conflicts with the team’s judgement, or should the final call always remain firmly with people?
