Taiwan has awarded a NT$46.55 million contract for an AI system intended to scan satellite images and identify military activity near the island. The system is designed to analyse 100 square kilometres of imagery within minutes, according to the South China Morning Post’s account of a defence ministry procurement notice.
Why it mattersThe contract went to ThinkTron, a Taiwan-Japan joint venture, and took effect on 25 September. The system is expected to be completed by the end of April, the report says. The intended gain is faster monitoring of changes in military deployments, with less time and manpower spent reviewing images.
Discuss: Should military AI surveillance be judged mainly by how quickly it spots activity, or by how its findings are checked before they inform decisions?
